What is Font Detector?
Font Detector is a free, browser-based tool that lets you instantly identify all the fonts used inside a PDF or Word document. Whether you're a designer trying to match a brand's typography, a developer auditing a document, or simply curious about a typeface — this tool gives you a clear, accurate list of every font embedded in your file.
Everything runs directly in your browser. Your files are never uploaded to any server, so your documents stay completely private.
How to Use the Font Detector
Using this tool is quick and straightforward — no account, no installation required.
- Upload your file — drag and drop a PDF or DOCX file onto the upload area, or click to browse your device.
- Click "Detect Fonts" — the tool will scan your document and extract all font data instantly.
- Review the results — a list of all detected fonts will appear, showing each font name along with any available style details.
The entire process takes just a few seconds, even for large documents.
Why Use This Tool?
Fonts play a major role in how documents look and feel. Identifying them shouldn't require expensive software or technical expertise. Here's why people find this tool useful:
- Design consistency — quickly identify fonts in client files to match them in your own designs.
- Brand auditing — check whether a document uses the correct brand typefaces before publishing.
- Print preparation — verify that all fonts are properly embedded before sending files to a printer.
- Document analysis — understand the typography structure of any file for archiving or editing purposes.
- 100% private — since processing happens in the browser, your sensitive documents are never sent anywhere.
Supported File Types
Font Detector currently supports the two most common document formats used by professionals and individuals alike:
- PDF (.pdf) — Portable Document Format files are scanned using both raw byte analysis and a PDF rendering engine for maximum accuracy. Embedded fonts, subsets, and font descriptors are all detected.
- Word Documents (.docx) — Modern Microsoft Word files are parsed directly from their internal XML structure, pulling font data from styles, runs, and the document's font table for a complete picture.
Support for additional formats may be added in the future. If you have a suggestion, feel free to share your feedback.
Known Limitations
While Font Detector works well for most standard documents, there are a few cases where results may be incomplete:
- Scanned or image-based PDFs — if a PDF contains only scanned images with no actual text layer, fonts cannot be detected.
- Older .doc files — legacy Word files (.doc) use a binary format that is harder to parse reliably. Using a .docx version of the same file will yield better results.
- System fonts — some documents reference system fonts by name without embedding them. These may still appear in results, but the font file itself isn't stored inside the document.
- Heavily encrypted PDFs — password-protected PDFs with strict permissions may block font data from being read.
For best results, use unprotected PDF or DOCX files with embedded fonts and an actual text layer.
